According to research, 99.6% people reported having had a bad boss at some time in their careers. Many of those bosses may not even realize they’re doing things that cause their staff to think of them as a bad boss! In this episode, we discuss an Indeed article about eight types of bad bosses, including unfriendly bosses, bosses with poor leadership skills, bosses who work alone, micromanagers, and more. Being a bad boss can have significant negative impacts, like lower employee morale, higher turnover, greater risk of legal liability, and harm to your employer brand.
If you have a bad boss, take notes and collect evidence, consider talking to fellow employees and/or your HR department about it, and depending on the situation, tell your boss about the way their behaviors are affecting you. It’s also a good idea to think about an exit strategy in case your efforts to improve the situation don’t work. Know that you’re not alone, and there’s hope for you to get through it, whether that means having your concerns addressed or leaving the organization for a better environment.
In this episode’s listener question, we’re asked about HR and legal departments who approach employee complaints as self-motivated. In the news, SHRM published its Q4 2024 Civility Index, including findings that there was a 30% increase in daily acts of incivility at work, that the top contributor to incivility was politics, and more.
