We hear from clients who are concerned that no one has any loyalty to their organization anymore. From our perspective, the baby boomer generation was probably TOO loyal, often staying with the same company their entire career because they felt they were supposed to, they didn’t know what else to do, or they didn’t want to look for something else. The younger generations are putting more of a priority on balance and activities outside of work, and they seem to have more confidence about finding a new role. They’ve only ever known change, so they’re more comfortable dealing with it. If leaders want more loyalty, they’ll have to create more than transactional relationships with their employees, understanding what they’re looking for and why.

Celebrating and acknowledging are small gestures that can help you retain employees. Studies show that people want to be heard and want it to be known that their contributions matter. Find out how your team wants to be celebrated, and be sure you’re thanking people on a regular basis and that you celebrate everyone, not just roles with successes that are easy to measure. Trust is also key; make sure that you’re communicating and sharing information that people need so they know what’s going on and aren’t left feeling isolated. The generation entering the workforce now is very driven by purpose, so it’s important to have a clear method to show purpose. Sometimes purpose isn’t obvious in the job, so we have to be very intentional to build that deeper connection.

In this episode’s listener question, we’re asked about promoting unity and collaboration in a politically charged environment. In the news, Gallup recently released their Global Leadership Report.
