In episode 76 of “The JoyPowered® Workspace Podcast,” JoDee and Susan discuss transgender employees with Jeremy York, President and Lead Consultant at InvigorateHR. Topics include why it’s important to talk about this topic, how to prepare your workplace to be more inclusive, and common myths about transgender issues in the workplace.
To start, JoDee shares results from a study conducted by the National LGBTQ task force and the National Center for Transgender Equality which received responses from 6,450 transgender participants that resulted in eye opening findings. For example, 50% of respondents reported being harassed at work. Susan and JoDee also discuss some simple changes organizations can make to their policies to create a more inclusive environment for everyone.
Jeremy York discusses why it is important to talk about transgender employees and how we can become more comfortable discussing transgender workplace issues. He says as our workplace expands, we have a lot of different types of people coming into the workplace and it all starts with a conversation. We need to educate ourselves on what the term transgender means. People tend to think that this is not a topic they will ever have to deal with. However, the reality is that they probably will have to deal with a transgender employee or one who is transitioning at some point. Jeremy goes on to discuss how organizations can be more inclusive and common myths people have when discussing transgender issues in the workplace.
For the listener question, JoDee and Susan are asked about some books they would recommend HR professionals read. In the news, Google has announced they will be shutting down their applicant tracking system and recruiting software in September 2020.
