In episode 101 of “The JoyPowered® Workspace Podcast,” JoDee and Susan discuss how to strengthen your self-leadership and become more resilient with leadership coaches Dr. Benjamin Ritter and Susan Drumm.

As business leaders and HR professionals, we have to be strong, creative, forward-thinking, and a steadying force when things are chaotic, scary, and unpredictable in the workplace and in the world. Dr. Ben Ritter calls in to share his insight on self-leadership, which he defines as leading yourself toward what you truly care about and being able to take action. Ben’s three C’s of self-leadership are clarity, confidence, and control; when you instill those traits within yourself, it helps you prioritize, be very intentional with your time, and lead yourself. Ben also discusses job crafting and the three main components that make up job satisfaction.

Susan Drumm joins the show to talk about resilience. Leaders with high levels of resilience are viewed as being more effective by their managers, peers, and direct reports, and firms that have the ability to bounce back from change and adversity don’t just survive – they thrive. Susan makes a connection between resilience and emotions. Depleting emotions like fear, frustration, impatience, and anger have a negative effect on our bodies and ability to think if we hold on to them for too long. Susan emphasizes working toward coherence, the state of optimal performance where your heart and brain are aligned, and she shares a simple technique to quickly get your body into a state of coherence.

In this episode’s listener mail, a listener asks how to foster the growth of both employees when a Gen X-er constantly asks a Gen Z-er for tech help. In the news, President Trump signed an executive order that prioritized job skills over education credentials for federal government jobs.
