In episode 134 of “The JoyPowered® Workspace Podcast,” JoDee and Susan discuss leadership with entrepreneur, keynote speaker, and leadership coach Jennifer McClure.

JoDee and Susan start the episode by discussing the mindsets and skills that Jacob Morgan outlines in his 2020 book The Future Leader. According to Morgan, future leaders will need to be global citizens, servant leaders, coaches, futurists, and more.

Jennifer joins the show to share her expertise with our listeners. She believes it’s important for everyone to have a strong personal brand so people can know who you are, what you’re great at, and what you’re passionate about. When speaking in public, leaders should think about it as just having a conversation and think ahead to get more confidence in the areas they’re nervous about.

To attract and retain talent, leaders should be thinking about the things we’ve been talking about for attracting millennials for years – being a great leader, being visible, and growing your people. HR’s been looking for “a seat at the table” for at least a decade, and one thing that happened with the pandemic in 2020 is that many HR leaders and HR professionals got it. Make sure you’re ready to step into that opportunity and really run with that seat you’ve been asking for all along.

If you’re a leader looking to do some skill building, take charge of your own personal development – don’t wait for your boss or someone in learning and development to give you a plan. There are lots of free and inexpensive resources out there now, so you don’t necessarily need to be given a budget to be able to do some development.

In this episode’s listener mail, a listener asks how to deal with pay compression. In the news, JoDee and Susan discuss a SHRM article suggesting that you learn what your employees missed about being together and what they didn’t miss as you consider a hybrid model or return to the office.
