In episode 137 of “The JoyPowered® Workspace Podcast,” JoDee and Susan discuss how to have honest, open, and effective conversations on topics that can be unpleasant.

People often ask us for advice on how to navigate uncomfortable situations at work, so in this episode, we discussed some of the questions we’ve gotten over the years on the topic of difficult conversations.

First, JoDee and Susan talk about how to tactfully tell your boss or other leaders that something they want to do is wrong, and what to do if they don’t budge. Topic number two is having race or gender conversations at work without fear – make sure you’re listening to understand rather than listening to respond. Third, the hosts share suggestions on addressing coworkers who are disrespectful. It’s important to set boundaries!

Next, JoDee and Susan discuss how to ask for a raise – do your homework and make sure you’re ready to present the business rationale. Another common topic is how to say no when asked to take on more than you can handle; it can be helpful to have a few scripts or bullet points that you use in different situations. Telling one of your staff members that they just aren’t cutting it can be a painful conversation. Make sure you’re as objective as you can be.

Another question we received was about admitting that you’ve made a mistake. It’s important to be clear, admit it as soon as possible, and learn from it. Our last topic is telling a boss you really like that you’re leaving the company. Give them as much notice as you can and explain your reasons for taking the new position.

JoDee and Susan discuss the origins of our podcast’s name and why it resonated with them. In the news, Hrmorning.com published an article listing nine ways to make hybrid meetings more effective.
