In episode 48 of “The JoyPowered™ Workspace Podcast,” JoDee and Susan discuss how to find great candidates for the job openings in your company. Topics include internal sources, external sources, and how to hire the best in a tight labor market. Mike Seidle and Doug Applegate from WorkHere stop by to talk about using geofencing in the sourcing of candidates.
With an unemployment rate of under 5%, our workforce is shrinking; the old tried and true methods of finding candidates may not be enough anymore. JoDee and Susan discuss some internal sources of candidates: internal job postings, management nomination processes, succession planning, management training programs, interns converting to full time, and temp to perm situations. External sources include employee referrals, external recruiting firms, posting on job sites, campus recruiting, community partners, social media, and traditional media.
Mike Seidle and Doug Applegate of WorkHere stop by to share their knowledge of geofencing in the sourcing of candidates. Location is very important; living close to work affects absenteeism and job satisfaction, and 25% of workers have quit their jobs due to their commute. Enter geofencing: a shape drawn on a map (with 3-meter precision) that tags everyone who walks in and out of that area with a mobile device, then advertises to them. Mike and Doug explain some geofencing tactics, like red-lining, showrooming, and conquesting.
JoDee and Susan discuss Inc. magazine’s advice on hiring the best in a tight labor market. Inc.’s suggestions are to define role behaviors you need, not experience; look outside your immediate industry; boost your internal training programs; leverage the power of coaches; and focus on culture development.
In this episode’s listener mail, Vicky has been reading about large companies ending forced arbitration for sexual harassment issues, and wants to know if her organization should follow suit. In best practices, listeners shared some software applications that make their work lives easier. In the news, JoDee and Susan discuss Cognizant’s list of 21 jobs of the future.
