Upskilling refers to training employees to enhance or develop skills within their current roles, which can help make them more effective or prepared for higher level positions. Reskilling is about teaching employees new skills to transition into entirely different roles, often in response to changes in the business or the industry. Both are essential for future-proofing the workforce!

In many industries, the roles that exist today didn’t exist 10 years ago, and we’re now in demand of new roles requiring different skill sets than our roles required previously. Investing in upskilling and reskilling helps organizations stay competitive with their competition for employment and improves job satisfaction and employee retention.

Start by doing a thorough skills gap analysis, having your HR teams and key stakeholders identify your organization’s current skills, compare them with what’s needed in the industry, and highlight areas of development opportunity. This helps pinpoint where additional training might be needed for your current employees.

Successful programs often blend formal training with practical, on-the-job learning. This might include online courses, mentorship, workshops, job rotations, or project-based learning. Leaders and organizations need to embrace a growth mindset where learning is seen as a core value of the company and people feel supported in their growth. Employees are not off the hook; they need to be proactive in identifying their skill gaps, exploring resources that can help them grow, and expressing interest in that development or next step in their career.
