In episode 89 of “The JoyPowered® Workspace Podcast,” JoDee and Susan discuss diversity and inclusion with expert Erin Brothers. Topics include how the diversity conversation is changing, how to be more inclusive, and what to do to promote diversity and inclusion.

Studies show that companies committed to diversity are better able to attract top talent, improve employee satisfaction and decision making, and be more customer oriented. We hear a lot about diversity, but not as much about inclusion, which is crucial for making people feel welcome and getting them involved.

Erin explains how the diversity conversation has been changing in the workplace; focusing on inclusion from an individual standpoint changes the game. To be more inclusive, it’s important to have conversations that are often scary or uncomfortable for some people. If you don’t intentionally include, then you unintentionally exclude. Other tactics for improving inclusion are making sure different types of people are represented in decision making, providing support for groups that need it, and holding training and focus groups.

In this episode’s listener mail, JoDee and Susan are asked for advice on dealing with a CEO who doesn’t believe in the importance of HR initiatives. In the news, the most common overtime error is not understanding how overtime is properly calculated.
